![]() Irony and dystopia sell, so I figured audiences would find One Day at a Time to be both too classically a Norman Lear sitcom and too direct, bordering on preachy, about the subjects it addressed. Some of that pushback can probably be chalked up to the infelicitous way Netflix made the announcement-over Twitter, using that chummy brand voice that implies corporations have feelings to offer a “just business” justification. But the outcry has been bigger than anyone anticipated, especially for a show that (per Netflix) just didn’t get enough viewers. I didn’t expect many to share my disappointment: Grateful though I was for each season we got, my hunch was that One Day at a Time was too niche and too light for its disappearance to matter. There is a universe, then, where fans of Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce’s Cuban American reboot of Whitney Blake and Allan Manings’ One Day at a Time-and I count myself among them-could have taken the show’s cancellation by Netflix in stride. The good news: You can already stream the first seven episodes (run, don't walk!), and the remaining one set to be released next Friday at 12:00 am ET. While the first season's episodes were dropped all at once, making the show *ultra* binge-worthy, season 2's episodes are dropped weekly, with the exception of the three-episode premiere on July 14. The last episode is titled "Love Triangle." What could it mean? When are new episodes released? Something interesting: The word "summer" is included in each title of season 1's episodes, while the word "love" is in all of season 2's episode titles. Yes! Episode 7 dropped on August 11, and there's still one more episode of season 2. I'm sure the finale will really seal the Jeremiah/Belly deal. Sadly, I think "killing time" is the theme for Jeremiah and Belly's relationship.Įither way, the two kiss until they are interrupted by a perfectly timed Conrad, and the episode ends. The three head to Brown so Conrad can take his final, and Jeremiah and Belly have a moment together while they kill time. Laurel has a deep chat with Julia (Susannah's sister) about their regrets over Susannah's death. This moment kind of sets a tone for the rest of the episode. Laurel apologizes to Belly and all is forgiven. Yikes! Later, Steven reconciles the situation by explaining how Belly has helped the Fisher brothers to his mother. She and Belly get into a pretty big mother-daughter fight and it ends with Laurel slapping Belly. Then, Laurel shows up to Cousins and she is mad. Episode 6 ends with Belly drunkenly calling her mom crying after a conversation with Conrad. To celebrate their last night there, they throw a rager, where things get a *bit* messy. Eventually, the brothers team up with Skye and try everything to try to get Aunt Julia to change her mind. Julia is joined by their cousin, Skye, who they've been estranged from due to family drama between their mothers. ![]() Belly and Conrad have weird unresolved tension, and Jeremiah is just waiting for his chance to swoop in. The crew returns to the beach house after Susannah's death and have to deal with the fact that Susannah's sister, Aunt Julia (Kyra Sedgwick), has moved all of Susannah's things out and plans to sell the property. Spoiler alert! The first episode picks back up the fall after Belly and Conrad officially begin dating long-distance, and flashes back and forth with the current summer, after they've (spoiler!) broken up, and Susannah has died. So, when are the next episodes going to be released?! Here's what to know. If you simply *must* know what happens next, you've still got some time before the final episodes drop. ![]()

The iPhone XS takes slightly softer portraits, but we don’t think this is a “beauty mode” like some have suggested. The accuracy of the cutout around the subject is good in both photos of the woman taken with the rear camera, but you can see how Smart HDR vastly improves the iPhone XS Portrait Mode photo. There have been improvements to Portrait Mode, especially with its accuracy in identifying subjects and applying bokeh, or blur ,around them. Case in point are the following two photos: The differences between the XS and XS Max over the iPhone X can be subtle, but in almost every case, the iPhone XS wins out thanks to Smart HDR. The difference when you then glimpse at the iPhone XS photo is startling. Take a look at the woman’s forehead, nose, and the background on the left side of the iPhone X photo: It’s all overexposed. You can easily see how much better the iPhone XS fares - the colors are more accurate, especially the skin tone, but what really shines is Smart HDR again. This is not a Portrait Mode photo, but a regular shot. This is even more apparent in the photograph of the woman in the middle of a New York City street. More importantly, the buildings in the foreground are brighter, delivering a much more balanced photograph. Those patterns are visible on the iPhone XS photo, and you can see the sky is also a tad bluer, and the clouds more defined. The sky looks a little overexposed on the iPhone X photo, enough to mask intricate cloud patterns. It’s a good comparison showing the differences between the iPhone X and the iPhone XS. However, it can be hard to tell which of the many small genetic differences between us and chimps have been significant to our evolution. These physical differences are underpinned by subtle changes at the level of our DNA. In the time since - brief, from an evolutionary perspective - our ancestors evolved the traits that make us human, including a much bigger brain than chimpanzees and bodies that are better suited to walking on two feet. Evolutionarily speaking, the wimps won after all.Humans split away from our closest animal relatives, chimpanzees, and formed our own branch on the evolutionary tree about 7 million years ago. It was these factors - brains and legs - that played a major role in humans' eventual global dominion. The Homo genus began developing larger brains that sucked energy away from muscles and selected for more economical muscle fibers. As we became bipedal, muscles primed for endurance would have also won out as our ancestors began walking long distances on their migrations across the globe. The researchers think we began getting weaker roughly 8 million years ago, when our lineage diverged from chimpanzees. These two factors likely explain much of the human-chimp strength gap, but other factors such as joint mechanics and muscle-tendon interactions play a role as well, with chimp arms better suited for the hanging and grabbing movements that they do every day. Chimp muscle fibers are longer than ours too, and the net result is that, pound-for-pound, their muscles are more powerful. Chimpanzee muscles, on the other hand, are more evenly balanced with less efficient but powerful MHC II muscle fibers they're the kind that come in handy when swinging from tree to tree in the forest. Humans tend to favor a type of muscle fiber called MHC I that allows for greater endurance and reduced energy consumption, but at the cost of raw strength. Where we differ, however, is in the type of fibers that together make up our skeletal muscles. Chimp and human muscles fundamentally work the same, they say, with filaments of actin sliding past thick myosin bands to produce contractions. In terms of static strength and contraction speed, human muscle fibers kept pace with chimp muscles. Direct tests of muscle fibers actually found many similarities between our cells and theirs. Their computer model found that chimps are only 1.35 times stronger than a human on average, a number that agrees with more recent lab tests pegging them at 1.5 times as powerful. Their study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, indicates our common conceptions of primate strength may be blown slightly out of proportion. Or, put another way, researchers wanted to know why humans are so weak. A new study from researchers at the University of Arizona and Ohio State University took a different approach to the problem: They performed direct tests of both human and chimp muscle fibers, and used computer models to determine how strong chimps really are. These estimates are likely based on experiments from the 1920s, when a researcher by the name of John Bauman recorded a chimp at the Bronx Zoo pulling 847 pounds with just one hand. ![]() When a human is attacked by a chimp, you'll see reports claiming the primates are anywhere from two to eight times as strong as a human, despite their small stature. Even when compared to our closest cousins, chimpanzees, the strength gap is obvious. Still, without the aid of tools and traps, creatures who call the wilderness home present a clear threat. ![]() Our lack of brawn is a result of our our big, energy-hungry brains, an adaption that seems to have worked out pretty well, all things considered.
